The Danger of Identity Theft
How Thieves Steal Identities
Thieves steal identities in a number of ways. Here is an explanation of some of the most common sources of identity theft.
Dumpster Diving
Though dumpster diving may not be high-tech, it is still a very popular means of committing identity theft. Thieves will dig through your trash for any documents containing personal identifying information. Such documents might include bank statements, credit card statements, junk mail, or any other document containing your name, address, etc.
Skimming
In this method of identity theft, thieves place special devices on credit card or ATM machines that read your card number and account information when you swipe your card. This information is stored in the device, which allows the thief to use your account for fraudulent purposes.

Phishing
Thieves will pretend to be financial institutions or other legitimate companies and send you spam email or pop-up messages trying to trick you into providing personal information.
Address Change
Filling out a change of address form enables identity theft because the thief can then receive your billing statements at another address. This also prevents you from seeing the bills for any accounts the thief opens in your name.
Stealing
This is the old-fashioned way of committing identity theft. The thief will steal your purse or wallet and use the information it contains to commit fraud. Thieves may also steal your mail, personnel records from your employer, or bank account checks.
